Import guide

The essentials of landed cost, explained simply. Better assumptions make better decisions.

General education, not country-specific legal or tax advice. These notes describe common concepts. Consult the supplier contract, your customs authority and a qualified broker for applicable requirements.

What are Incoterms?

Incoterms are standardized trade terms that allocate delivery obligations, costs and risk between buyer and seller. They do not set the customs duty rate or replace your purchase contract. Agree the named place or port and the applicable edition with the supplier.

FOB vs. CIF: what changes?

FOB and CIF are sea/inland-waterway terms. Under FOB, the buyer usually pays the main ocean freight and insurance. Under CIF, the seller pays freight and provides insurance to the named destination port, but risk transfers when goods are on board at origin—not at arrival. Destination duty and import taxes are not automatically included.

Freight & insurance in landed cost

If transport or insurance is paid separately, add it to your cash outlay. If it is already in the supplier quote, do not add it again. Customs valuation may include or exclude transport depending on destination rules. Choose the basis or enter a manual customs value after checking with a broker.

Customs duties and import taxes

Customs duty is a levy on imported goods. Import taxes may be assessed on a different base, sometimes including customs duty or other charges. Rates depend on classification, origin, destination and other factors. This app uses only your entered estimates; it does not determine legal obligations. Recoverable import tax is still included in this cash-outlay estimate.

Markup is not profit margin

Markup measures profit relative to cost; margin measures profit relative to revenue. If a unit costs 20 and sells for 30, profit is 10. Markup is 10 ÷ 20 = 50%; margin is 10 ÷ 30 = 33.3%. The app shows gross margin before overhead, financing, selling fees and income taxes.

Why exchange rates affect profit

A higher reporting-currency cost for each unit of purchase currency increases purchase cost and may increase the customs base, duty and tax. Enter the rate you expect to pay, including any conversion spread if relevant. This app never fetches or invents rates. Same-currency conversion is fixed at 1.

Incoterm starting assumptions in this app

EXW, FCA and FOB start with freight and insurance separate. CFR and CPT start with freight included. CIF and CIP include freight and insurance. DAP, DPU and DDP include freight and inland delivery; DPU also starts with port handling included as a simplified unloading allowance. DDP starts with clearance, duty and tax included. These are editable planning presets, not full contractual rules. Inspection and other fees stay separate until you change them.

For DDP or any duty-inclusive quote, enter the actual embedded duty and tax amounts or manually override customs value. That avoids calculating new charges on top of charges already in the quote.

Your data and privacy

Calculations run entirely in the browser. Saves use localStorage, not a database or cloud account. They belong to the current browser profile and device and are not automatically shared or synchronized. Private browsing or clearing site data may erase them. Keep CSV backups of important plans. Sample rows are never written to your saved data unless you deliberately save or duplicate them.

Calculation quality checks

Common questions

Are the rates official?

No. Customs duty, import tax, exchange rates and expenses are entered manually. Sample values are illustrative, not official rates or quotes.

Can I print to PDF for free?

Yes. Choose Print report or Print comparison, then use your browser’s Save as PDF destination. No paid PDF service is used.

Does changing currency convert every expense?

No. The manual exchange rate converts only the supplier purchase quote. Expenses and selling prices are entered directly in the reporting currency. When you change reporting currency, re-enter those amounts.

How do I publish this app for free?

Export the complete project, install dependencies with npm install, run npm run build, and upload the resulting dist folder using Cloudflare Pages Direct Upload on its Free plan. The included README has exact steps and limits. No deployment has been made automatically.
